About Us

We offer a unique and specialist early childhood education for children aged from 2 years until they turn 6 years of age. Our centre embraces the Nature and Montessori pedagogies, along with the Ministry of Education’s Te Whāriki framework, which all fit seamlessly together.

We pride ourselves on our small, homely, family-like environment. To this end, our centre combines the age groups so the children can interact as one big, happy, family-like group. This tuakana–teina approach encourages older or more expert children to ‘buddy up’ with younger or less expert children. As well as helping them to teach and support each other, this approach strengthens the family-like bonds they experience. We believe this nurturing and respectful environment to be the best setting for young children to grow and develop into their special unique selves.

We are a wholly NZ-owned business, privately run and owned by Jan Matthews and her team. Our small teaching team includes a lovely nurturing blend of experienced teachers who are a mix of ECE registered teachers, unregistered teachers and Montessori teachers. We have limited our roll to a maximum of 30 children so we can provide the best quality education and care, with excellent teacher-to-child ratios.

Jan Matthews

“Kia ora. I am an enthusiastic, qualified and registered Early Childhood teacher, with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education), Montessori diploma (NAMC), Guide certificate (AMI), and Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Primary).

My passion is working with children. I love to encourage them to discover themselves and develop their own ‘specialness’. I thoroughly enjoy working with both older and younger children. In my personal life, I relish being in the outdoors and I am always setting myself a new challenge. I particularly enjoy running and spending time in the stunning Marlborough Sounds with my family.“

Our dedicated teachers closely observe each child to identify their individual interests and skills. From here, we encourage each child into experiences that build on these interests.

When you enrol your child at our preschool, you can be assured that your child will be nurtured and supported to develop independence, confidence, a great respect for nature, and a love of learning.

Everything we provide—our highly experienced and qualified teachers, the activities and experiences we offer, our specialised learning materials, our natural free-play materials, and our indoor and outdoor environments—are designed to give your child an excellent early childhood education that emphasises independence and a journey of learning and self-discovery.
